Sport / Seven athletes given funding
SEVEN high-performing athletes from six different sports have been awarded travel funding for training and competition.
Round two of the Athlete Travel Award Scheme 2023/24 scheme has seen seven athletes each awarded £750 towards their travel costs between October and March.
They are:
- Magnus Bullough (swimming)
- Katie Clubb (athletics)
- Annie Mowat (netball)
- Michelle Sandison (athletics)
- Layla Todd (triathlon)
- Hannah Williamson (hockey)
- Magnie Williamson (football)
Athletes have been awarded funding based a number of criteria including goals, training and competition schedule and level of performance.
The Athlete Travel Award Scheme, which is run in partnership with sportscotland and Shetland Islands Council, helps island athletes to access high quality training and competition opportunities away from the isles, and to support their development in performance sport.
The scheme has been running for six years and offers two rounds of funding per year, making it more accessible to sports that operate at different seasons of the year.
The scheme will re-open in February 2024 for applications for the first round of the 2024/25 scheme.
Shetland Islands Council’s active schools manager Louise Johnson said: “We are delighted to be able to support these talented Shetland athletes with funding to assist their off island travel costs for training and competition.
“We hope this funding supports their development and gives them the opportunity to thrive whilst representing Shetland nationally.”
