Community / Forty years and counting as motor show to celebrate anniversary in June
THE CLASSIC motor show is set to return in June in what is its 40th anniversary.
The popular event will take place at the Clickimin in Lerwick during the first weekend of June.
From modest beginnings in 1984 at the Gilbertson Park, the biennial event has gone on to become one of the larger classic vehicles shows in Scotland.
To mark the anniversary, some of the vehicles from the first show will be on display, along with a photographic record of the event.
Attending the show this year is Matt Kirby from Yorkshire, with his 1971 Lotus Elan S4 Sprint.
He was working at Shetland Seafoods during the early 70s and went south to buy what he had assumed would be the only car of its type in Shetland.
However one week before his trip away Kirby noticed the same car with the same specifications in Lerwick.
After buying his own one, he became friends with the owner of Shetland’s other Elan Sprint.
Kirby said he left Shetland in 1976 and his car was taken off the road a couple of years later when it became unreliable.
The long story short is that due to other priorities the car lay in his garage for 42 years, but thanks to the extra time offered by the Covid pandemic he managed to eventually to restore the car.
Now the restored car is set to enjoy a return to Shetland at this year’s show.

Organisers said that due to the external areas at Clickimin being designated for exhibition space, free public parking for show visitors will be provided at the Anderson High School.
This will be accessed from North Loch Drive, via the North Lochside roundabout, and will be clearly signposted.
The committee also said it wished to extend its thanks to NorthLink Ferries for their continued support of the event as the main sponsor.
