Weather / Hotel owner expresses his appreciation to building firm and fire crews
THE OWNER of the Shetland Hotel has expressed his “heartfelt thanks” to a local building firm as well as volunteer crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who worked through the night and in horrendous weather to make the hotel’s roof structure safe.
Robert Smith said the team from Leask Builders had clearly gone above and beyond in extremely challenging conditions.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to Brydon Leask and also Garry, his dad, getting a team together and helping us out on short notice and when everyone trying to enjoy some down time,” he said.
“Also, our thanks to the our local fire brigade for being on site and ensuring everything was as safe as it could be.”
Fire and rescue services were alerted to the incident at half past elven last night when sheets of roofing started coming off the hotel on Holmsgarth Road in a force 10 easterly storm.

The road was closed, and diversions were put in place.
Smith added: “It has affected the south side of the roof on the side nearest Holmsgarth.
“Sheets have come off in that area, and the problem initially was the sheets half on and half off; hence the road closure.
“Today (Thursday) with the weather having abated our contractors Leask Builders are on site, removing those sheets and checking the rest to make sure all okay.”
A spokesperson for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Operations control mobilised two appliances to the scene and crews worked hard to make the roof structure safe.
“The crews left the scene at 8.42am on Thursday, 28 December, after ensuring the area was made safe and handing over to the local council.”
Holmsgarth Road is open to traffic again.
