Community / Most schools closed but some are open
THE MAJORITY of local schools and early learning and childcare (ELC) settings will stay shut today (Monday) due to the wintry weather.
Open are:
- Baltasound Junior High School,
- and the primary schools at Burravoe, Cullivoe, Foula and Fair Isle.
Scalloway Primary School and Whalsay School were initially announced to be open but are now confirmed to stay closed today.
A number of bus services have been suspended pending reviews later in the morning or afternoon. There are also some early morning disruptions to flights at Sumburgh airport.
Temperatures across Shetland have been at or below freezing and there are strong northerly winds over the isles, with further snow showers expected.
Road conditions are hazardous in many areas, affecting school transport.
A Met Office yellow weather warning is in place for many parts of the UK today, including Shetland.
At the moment Shetland will remain under a weather warning until Friday. The warnings are for snow and ice until Wednesday, when it changes to just snow.
The strong winds may also affect the inter-island ferries. People are advised to check www.shetland.gov.uk/ferrystatus or call the appropriate voicebanks before travelling.
