Community / Shetland offers refuge to Syrian family
THE FIRST of two families from war-torn Syria have started rebuilding their lives in Lerwick after arriving in Shetland earlier this month.
Shetland Islands Council signed up to the UK government’s Syrian Vulnerable Person Resettlement Scheme back in 2015 and it has since been putting a range of service in place to help the refugees settling in the isles.
On Friday, the SIC said it would make no comment on their arrival, but back in November it had said that preparations for two families to move into homes were almost complete.
Under the Vulnerable Person Resettlement Scheme, the government has made a commitment to resettle 20,000 people from refugee camps in communities across the UK by 20,000.
