A SANDWICK knitwear firm has become the latest Shetland business to be broken into, with money and several charity collection boxes being stolen over the weekend.
Police have reported that Laurence Odie Knitwear Ltd in Sandwick was broken into between 5pm on Friday and 11am on Sunday.
The culprits caused “a large amount of damage” while breaking in. The money and charity boxes have not been recovered.
It follows two thefts in Yell in the middle of the week. A large sum of money was stolen from plant hire and haulage firm Victor Jamieson between Wednesday and Thursday, while thieves also broke into the Hamnavoe Church in Burravoe and stole a collection box.
Lerwick detective sergeant Bryan Ronald said the thieves “appear to be targeting local businesses and show no regard for the community or the good causes that are being affected”.
Investigations into thefts from garage businesses in Hamnavoe and Ollaberry over Christmas are ongoing and no arrests have been made.
