News round-up / Family history society completes move, NorthLink staff raise cash, Eddi Reader returns
THE SHETLAND Family History Society has now completed its move to Shetland Amenity Trust’s headquarters at Garthspool in Lerwick.
As previously reported, the society is expected to stay there for two years before moving to the Shetland Museum and Archives.
Its previous premises at Hillhead was said to be in poor condition.
The family history society offices will be open to the public every week day afternoon from 2pm to 4pm and by appointment by contacting secretary@shetland-fhs.org.uk.
Shetland Family History Society chair Susan Cooper said: “We are delighted to be in our new offices at Garthspool and look forward to welcoming our first visitors.
“Moving offices was a daunting task but it is great to be set up in our new location and to be working alongside the team at the Shetland Amenity Trust.”
Ruth Mackenzie, chair of the Shetland Amenity Trust, added that she hopes the link-up could “lead to even more opportunities for future collaboration”.
STAFF from NorthLink Ferries have raised over £6,600 for the Brain Tumour Charity over the last year.
Fundraising activities included sponsored walks, raffles and sweepstakes.
Passenger services supervisor and charity fundraising leader Kathryn Fullerton said: “I’m incredibly proud of everyone that has been involved throughout 2019 to raise such a fantastic amount for The Brain Tumour Charity.
“One of our colleagues nominated the charity as it was special to them and it’s been a lot of fun to do so many varied activities and help support.”
SCOTTISH singer Eddi Reader will return to Shetland this summer for a career-spanning performance at Mareel.
Reader will take to the stage at the Lerwick venue on 20 August as she celebrates her 40th year as a live performer.
Limited tickets are still available via the Shetland Arts box office.
