Letters / Only in Shetland …
In the last few months, we’ve had two major incidents declared in Shetland; hungry Orca stealing our electricity and when that plot failed, we were visited by tonnes of wet snow (also known as The Big Sleet) which snapped our electricity poles like matchsticks.
Shetland kept going though, no adversity is too big for this community!
During the latter event I had direct experience of human kindness when I was rescued by a passing motorist at 11pm having driven 32 miles on ice only to be stopped by the natural wonder of Ollaberry Hill. That was one reverse toboggan track too many for my wee sports car. Thanks to Tommy and Kelly??
No damage done and I got to buy my first snow shovel the next day. I had lots of free exercise digging my car out and I got it home in one piece. Two snow days ensued and then I got to go back to work.
Only in Shetland would my life seem so complete. To paraphrase Mr Gump; Shetland is like a box of chocolates.
