Community / Brae High School staff raise thousands by running London Marathon
STAFF members from Brae High School have raised almost £11,000 for charities close to their heart by completing the London Marathon two weeks ago.
Mike Batty and Julie Kirkness were running to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust, while Hazel-Ann Johnson did the same in support of Alzheimer Scotland.
The Teenage Cancer Trust has been supporting Batty’s daughter Niamh following her cancer diagnosis with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December 2021.
Although now in full remission, Niamh continues to receive support from her teenage and young adult clinical nurse Amanda Copland who has helped during the many challenging times during her treatment.
Batty said he felt that he needed to do something challenging as a means of saying thank you, so was persuaded to enter the marathon.
“This was indeed a challenge, as I went from couch to marathon in 16 weeks,” he said, adding that he could not have completed this without the support from Julie.
The pair trained together from December until April and ran the race in a time of 4hrs 34min, completing the whole race together.
So far, they have raised nearly £7,000 for the cancer charity. The JustGiving page will stay open for another week for anyone wishing to donate.
Meanwhile Hazel-Ann Johnson raised £3,755 for Alzheimer Scotland in memory for her granny.
