News / Walk to raise money for in-demand Women’s Aid

A SPONSORED walk is due to take place in October to raise money for the local Women’s Aid branch, which is proving to be increasingly busy.

A group of fundraisers will walk from Lerwick to Bonhoga on Sunday 7 October covering the distance of a half-marathon.

Shetland Women’s Aid board member Catherine Williams said the walk was taking place to raise money at a time when funding is decreasing.

“Sadly, like many charities, funding has been cut to the charity and this has a direct impact on the women and children who access the service and the staff who deliver it,” she said.

Money raised from the walk will go towards to the charity’s refuge which provides a safe place for women and children fleeing domestic violence, play equipment for children accessing the service and training opportunities for staff.

The Shetland Women’s Aid branch has seen demand increase and it has a waiting list for both adults and children.

It is currently working with over 90 women, with 20 people waiting for support, while there are 58 youngsters in service and another 20 on the waiting list.

“Women’s Aid provide counselling to women and children, one to one support, advocacy and a refuge,” Williams said.

“The refuge is a safe place for women and children who are fleeing domestic abuse and is a critical life line resource. Domestic abuse is an issue that affects many women and children in Shetland, and sadly there is currently a waiting list for both adults and children requiring support from the service.”

Anyone interested in joining in the walk anyone can contact the branch on the Shetland Women’s Aid Facebook page, while people can donate online using JustGiving.
