News / Blue green algae in Voe
TOXIC blue green algae has been found in Voe.
Shetland Islands Council received a notification from environmental body SEPA on Monday that algae had been discovered in the Loch of Voe.
Notices have been put up in the local shop and pub warning against contact with the algal scum, as well as next to the loch and along the outlet burn which runs down to Lower Voe.
Nearby landowners have also been notified, in addition to NHS Shetland and the Shetland Anglers Association.
At the moment there is no adverse effect on water supplies.
Last week blue green algae was confirmed at the Lochans, at Ness of Sound, on the island of Yell.
