News / Unpaid work for youngster
A TEENAGER has been given unpaid work after he admitted acting in a racially aggravated way by calling a man a “monkey” in Lerwick.
The 16 year old shouted at the pedestrian on the town’s South Road on 20 September from the passenger seat of a car
The youngster, who can’t be named for legal reasons, also previously pled guilty to failing to appear at Lerwick Sheriff Court on 14 October
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told the court on Wednesday that the teenager shouted “hey monkey, where are you going?” to the passer-by, which left him “deeply offended”.
Representing himself, the 16 year old – who had been drinking at the time of the incident – had nothing to say apart from an apology.
Sheriff Philip Mann said that “drinking to that extent” usually leads to trouble and gave the young man a total of 120 hours of unpaid work.
