Business / Praise for local food businesses after Great Taste recognition
SHETLAND Food and Drink says it is “thrilled” that two local businesses were recognised in this year’s national Great Taste awards.
Shetland Sea Salt, based in Scalloway, has seen its rating from the Guild of Fine Food upgraded having received a one star award last year.
Judges on the panel paid tribute to the quality of the salt, with one stating the flavour was “clean and sweet and without any harshness” and another praising the “gorgeous flakes” and “great clarity of flavour”.
Shetland Sea Salt is run by the Sandison family and one of those involved, Laura Hughes, said they were “absolutely thrilled” that the quality of their small-batch product had been recognised by the judges.
“We’re proud that we have continued to develop and perfect our product during what has been such a challenging time for everyone,” she said.
Shetland Food and Drink manager Claire White said her team were “thrilled” at the “outstanding national success” achieved by Shetland Sea Salt, which is a member of the Taste of Shetland group.
“It’s testament to the hard work and ingenuity behind this Shetland family business,” White said.
Sauerkraut producer Good Nude Food – run by Shetlander Evonne Morrison – has also been given a one-star Great Taste Award for her supergreens with spirulina Superkraut.
She said: “I’m delighted to have been awarded another Great Taste award for my Superkraut this year.
“It’s really hard work growing a food company so to be recognised at such a high level is fantastic and something I’m very appreciative of.”
Superkraut, which comes in three different varieties, is also nominated in several categories at this year’s Nourish Awards, which celebrates the UK’s best health foods, with the winners to be announced this Friday.
