Environment / Students’ green team praised after award win
A ‘GREEN team’ formed to raise awareness of environmental sustainability issues in and around Shetland’s college campuses has received praise after winning an award.
The Shetland Students’ Green Team recently won the society of the year prize at the 2019 Highlands and Islands Student Association awards.
The group wants to see the Shetland College and NAFC Marine Centre campuses, which are both part of the UHI network, become more eco-friendly.
Recent activities have included pushing the single-use plastic issue and collecting used pens from staff and students for recycling, while more widely they have undertaken events like beach cleans.
Their award win was mentioned at a meeting of the Shetland College board meeting on Monday.
Chairman Peter Campbell said: “I propose that we minute our appreciation of what they do and congratulate them on the achievement of winning this HISA award.”
Shetland College’s operations manager Rory Gillies added: “Well done to them for achieving that”.
