Sport / National surfing competition to take place this weekend
SURFERS from across Scotland are set to descend on Shetland this weekend as the isles host a national competition.
The Gathering of the Clans event will be held in the Sumburgh area on Saturday and Sunday.
The first piece of action will take place at around 9am on Saturday, either at the end of the runway at Sumburgh, at Scatness or Quendale.
Anyone coming for a look are asked to be mindful of where they are parking as there will be around 40 to 50 competitors involved.
It is being organised by the Scottish Surfing Federation, and hosted by local club 60°N Boardriders – Britain’s most northerly surf group.
It will span categories such as men, women, juniors and masters – 35 plus.
60°N Boardriders president Vince Attfield said earlier this year that while the waves can be “fickle”, Shetland can be a fine place for surfing – if the conditions are right.
The local surfing club formed around 15 years ago and has helped to create a community of likeminded folk with an interest in the sport.
