A LOCAL GP says she is “gutted” that money has been stolen from a charity box in her surgery in Hillswick – but has appealed for the person who took the cash to quietly return it in an envelope and “no more will be said or done”.
Susan Bowie said the money, thought to be around £30, was taken in the last few days.
The GP said the money had been donated in return for boxes of locally grown seeds available at the Hillswick surgery.
The proceeds were due to be given to local mental health charity Mind Your Head.
A SOCIAL housing development at Wista in Lerwick has been named as a finalist in the Scottish Design Awards.
Designed by Née Gibson Architects for Hjaltland Housing Association the six new homes were built during the pandemic.
Winners of the Scottish awards will be announced in June.
THERE was success for a young athlete from Shetland at the Scottish National Youth Triathlon championships held at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow at the weekend.
Layla Todd of Shetland Triathlon Club came third in the female competition for 15 to 16 year olds in a time of 37:13.
The competition consisted of a 400m swim, 10 kilometre bike race followed by a three kilometre run.
A GOSPEL concert, organised by insurance broker TL Dallas and held in the Cunningsburgh Hall earlier this month, has raised more than £4,000 for charity.
Local TL Dallas office manager Ruth Newbold said: “We were absolutely blown away with the success of our charity fundraising Gospel concert, which raised the fantastic amount of £2,092.50 on the night.
“This money has then been matched by TL Dallas, which means each of our chosen charities which are Cancer Research, Mind Your Head, Alzheimer’s and Teenage Cancer Trust will receive over £1,000 each.”
She added: “We couldn’t have done it without such a wonderful line up of performers who gave up their time and provided an excellent night of entertainment, and everyone who bought a ticket to the event.”
They were Bigton & Sandyburn singers; Victoria Byrne-McCombie; Janis, Jenna, Jamie & David; Sarah & Stu and the North Ness Boys. Liam Brannan managed the sound, Jonathan Ritch set up the PA system and Andrew Nicolson compered the even.
THE ROTARY Club of Shetland will be holding a quiz night at the Sandwick Social Club on Saturday.
Any funds raised will go towards the Hoswick Play Park and other local charities.
Chair of the Rotary Club’s services committee Robbie McGregor reminded everybody interested to attend that they would make an 8pm prompt start.
NORTHERN Isles MP Alistair Carmichael has secured a commitment from Grant Shapps, the secretary of state for energy security and net zero, to meet and discuss the potential role of Sullom Voe Terminal in North Sea carbon capture.
Last week terminal operator EnQuest confirmed that it had been offered carbon storage licences from the North Sea Transition Authority.
Carmichael said: “It is very encouraging that the secretary of state is willing to meet on this issue. There is enormous potential in the Sullom Voe site but there is also an enormous amount of further work that will be needed to bring this project to its full potential.
“If we get this right then Sullom Voe can remain at the centre of the UK energy ecosystem for decades to come, and play a key role in delivering net zero.”
