News / Twins admit causing Clement’s Hall blaze
TWO teenage twins from Lerwick have admitted responsibility for a blaze that caused substantial damage to a listed building in the town.
On 20 October last year fire fighters were called out to extinguish the fire which caused substantial damage to the 100 year old St Clements Hall on Lerwick’s St Olaf Street.
No one was injured in the fire, but the rear of the building, which is being converted into offices, was badly affected by the flames and smoke.
On Wednesday at Lerwick Sheriff Court, 19 year olds Lee and Drew Hamilton pled guilty to causing the blaze by setting fire to a couch.
They also admitted maliciously smashing a number of windows and mirrors, as well as hammering holes in the floor and walls.
The pair, who live at 1 St Ladies Drive and 89 St Olaf Street, were released on bail while background reports are compiled, and were told to return on 6 January for sentence.
However Lee Hamilton was brought back to court on Thursday where he appeared from custody with 20 year old Claire Antonio, of 22 Grostane, Lerwick.
Hamilton admitted forcing entry to a flat in St Olaf Street by kicking open a locked door, behaving aggressively and fighting with Antonio while on bail from the day before.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the court would “look stupid” if it released on bail a man with such a history of re-offending.
Accordingly, honorary sheriff Arnold Duncan remanded him in custody until 9 December.
Antonio, who also admitted behaving aggressively and fighting with Hamilton, was released on bail whole her case was continued without plea until 25 November.
