Arts / Community choir takes you ‘Beside the Sea’
SHETLAND Community Choir is getting ready for the first of a series of concerts during spring and summer which start this Friday (12 May).
Beside the Sea will feature a varied programme ranging from Haydn’s The Heavens are Telling to works by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo and local musician Eamonn Watt, celebrating the natural world.
Conductor Robert Bennet there would also be performances from Shetland Schools music festival as well as the Scalloway shanty singers.
He added: “There will be teas and cakes after the concert with donations to the RNLI. Everyone is welcome to stay and socialise and meet the choir.”
Now in its 81st year and accompanied by David Lees, Shetland Community Choir has between 25 and 30 members, is open to all ages and voices and is “characterised by diversity and inclusivity”, Bennet said.
Friday’s Beside the Sea concert will be at St. Columba’s Church in Lerwick, starting at 7.30pm.
Tickets at the door are priced at £8/£5 (conc) or £12 for a family. They can also be bought through this Facebook page.
