Arts / Female skaters wanted for photo project
A PHOTOGRAPHER is looking to hear from any female skaters in Shetland who would be interested in featuring in a project taking place in the run up to next year’s Olympics.
Hannah Bailey’s To Balance is Trust project, which has the support of major image agency Getty, aims to show the “real face” of skateboarders.
She said this is to counter the “controlled Olympic vision”.
Skateboarding will make its Olympic debut at the Tokyo games in 2021.
Due to restrictions in travel, Aviemore based Bailey is interested in photographing any female skaters in Shetland.
She is effectively limited to the Highlands and Islands while the region remains in level one of coronavirus restrictions.
“Shetland has been on my mind for many years to visit, and I thought this could be the time,” Bailey said.
“Edinburgh and Glasgow is interesting, but I’m intrigued by those skating further from the cities. If there were female skaters up there who would want to show their landscape and tell me their stories.”
Shetland’s only skatepark was opened in Lerwick back in 2014.
Bailey, meanwhile, is an award-winning photographer who has been “immersed in the underground scenes of action sports, adventure and the outdoors for over 10 years”.
Her work has been used in publications such as i_D, Dazed, Asian Geographic and Women’s Fitness.
She said the To Balance is Trust project is about “putting the power of the photo back in the hands of the skaters, because there are some really inspiring stories of ladies who skate out there, and I have been lucky to meet many”.
