News / Grantfield flats go-ahead
LERWICK’s Grantfield area has received a boost after a new three-storey block of flats and offices proposed to be built on the disused site of the former fire station was given the go-ahead.
Construction on the nine-flat building should start by the end of the year, with work expected to be complete by spring 2018.
Grantfield Developments Ltd submitted a planning application in January for the building, which will contain office space on its ground floor.
Shetland Telecom, which houses broadband equipment in a former public toilet next door, will move apparatus into the development.
Shetland Islands Council’s planning team said the proposed building will “add vibrancy to the fabric of the streetscape” and will have a “positive impact” on the surrounding area.
A total of 13 new car parking spaces are earmarked for the site.
