News / Samaritans cyclist to finish UK-wide trip in Lerwick
A FUNDRAISER who will cycle around Samaritans branches across the UK is set to visit Lerwick in May.
Steve Johnson will set off from Sussex in the south east of England in April before pedalling 1,600 miles around the country as he raises funds for the Samaritans charity.
He plans to reach the Shetland branch on 24 May after stopping by 28 other branches.
Coincidentally, the Lerwick team – which has been on the go since 1985 – will be celebrating their anniversary that weekend.
Steve said he is “very much” looking forward to visiting Shetland for the culmination of his trip, which aims to fundraise as well as recruit volunteers to the Samaritans.
“A gentle ride with Lerwick branch members and anyone else who fancies giving their bike a weekend spin could be a perfect end to the journey,” he said.
“The Samaritans provides a critical life-line for people who are suicidal, anxious or who simply need someone to talk to.
“Volunteers based in over two hundred branches across the British Isles answer phones, reply to texts and emails, and speak to people face to face. Anyone who can spare fifteen hours a month for this vital work is welcome to join us.”
