Community / Candle bags available for Relay for Life ceremony
MORE details have been released about the Relay for Life’s Candle of Hope ceremony, which offers people a chance for reflection whilst looking to the future.
The ceremony will take place at 10.30pm on the Cancer Research relay night – Saturday 28 May.
Relayers will circle the track at the Clickimin Leisure Centre, which will be lit up by the glow of illuminated candle bags.
Each bag will have a special meaning to the person who decorated it.
The ceremony at this year’s relay will be special as it will remember those lost through the pandemic and folk who were unable to be comforted.
Performances by Amber Thomson and Kirrmirren will also accompany the ceremony.
Candle bags are available from the following outlets: Mainland’s Shop (Dunrossness), Bigton Shop, Sandwick Baking Company, Scalloway Meat Company, CRUK Shop, Bank of Scotland, Thulecraft, Ninian, Brae Garage, Robinson & Morrisons (Weisdale), Eid Community Co-operative (Aith), JWJ (Whalsay), Ollaberry Shop, R.S. Henderson’s (Yell) and the Final Checkout, Unst.
Bags will also be available for purchase and decoration during the gala day at Clickimin which precedes the Relay on Saturday 28 May.
Each candle bag contains a slip of paper which can be completed with the name or names of folk people wish to appear on the ceremony’s roll of honour.
These names will appear on a screen during the ceremony.
This can be done in memory of loved ones, or to celebrate survivors, or people can decide to keep your moment private.
Bags and slips should be returned to one of the shops above or a committee member. A donation of £5 is suggested for each candle bag.
