Politics / Carmichael ‘deeply shocked’ by death of MP after stabbing
ALISTAIR Carmichael has offered his condolences after Essex Conservative MP Sir David Amess was stabbed to death at a constituency surgery earlier today (Friday).
A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Amess, 69, had been an MP since the early 1980s. He represented the Southend West constituency.
Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael said on Twitter: “Deeply shocked to hear the awful news of the death of my friend David Amess.
“David was a warm and funny man, dedicated to his community. Parliament will be the poorer for his loss.
“My condolences to his family and friends.”
Conservative Highlands and Islands MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston also said on Twitter: “Sir David Amess was a thoroughly decent man and respected across Parliament. He was just doing his job.
“His loss today is greatest for his family, but it is also a loss for his constituents, our Parliament and our democracy. My thoughts are with all who loved him.”
