Community / Petition demanding compensation from Viking Energy handed in to developer
A PETITION asking for compensation payments to be made to those most affected by the construction of the Viking Energy wind farm has been sent to the developer.
Protest group Save Shetland said on Tuesday it had collected more than 700 signatures during the last few weeks.
Construction of the hugely controversial 103-turbine wind farm in the central mainland of Shetland got underway this summer.
Developer SSE Renewables said it had a track record of being a responsible neighbour.
Most affected by the construction work is Charlotte Robertson, a lady on her mid 80s who lives on her own in what is known as the halfway house.
Save Shetland said: “Our petition demanding compensation for Charlotte Robertson of Sandwater and others whose lives are being disrupted by the construction of the Viking Energy wind farm was delivered to the post office today, addressed to the Viking Energy office in Lerwick.
“It was signed by 717 people (504 of whom are from Shetland), who shared our concerns about those severely impacted by the construction activities.
“The petition is accompanied by a letter from Ms Robertson herself. Save Shetland would like to thank everyone who signed.
“We think this is a strong signal that cannot be ignored and look forward to Viking Energy’s response.”
A spokesperson for the developer responded: “Viking Energy Wind Farm is being developed and constructed by SSE Renewables which has a long track record throughout Scotland and the UK of being a responsible developer.
“As part of SSE, we do everything necessary to ensure our developments, including Viking Energy Wind Farm, are delivered sensitively and to the highest standards, with strict adherence to consent conditions.
“While we cannot comment on specific cases, Viking Energy Wind Farm is committed to being a responsible neighbour, serving as an integral part of the Shetland community, both during construction and for many years to come during operation.”
