Politics / Election: more power for the isles?
AMID constitutional wrangling either side of the Scottish independence referendum, debate has rumbled on about the level of autonomy Shetland should be granted.
The Our Islands Our Future campaign with Orkney and the Western Isles has won some concessions, while the SNP made a big play of its “Lerwick Declaration” when Scotland’s then First Minister Alex Salmond visited back in summer 2014.
More recently a local group, Wir Shetland, has formed and is campaigning for much more far-reaching powers to be devolved to the islands.
We asked each of the constituency candidates how far they think autonomy for Shetland should extend.
