News / Councillor has world vision
A SHETLAND councillor has been inducted as an ambassador for the charity World Vision.
Lerwick North member Stephen Leask attended a ceremony in Milton Keynes on Wednesday to mark his induction.
World Vision is an international charity and Christian organisation devoted to improving the lives of the most vulnerable children.
Leask has been a member of the charity for the last 15 years.
He said he was “honoured, humbled and extremely proud” to be named as an ambassador.
Among the areas World Vision work in are child health and protection, emergency response and helping communities to become more resilient to natural and man-made hazards.
Leask said he was spurred into supporting the organisation after visiting Albania, primarily to see the archaeological site of Butrinti.
“I saw first hand the conditions of poverty and deprivation, and I felt if I could help in some small way I should, so I joined the child sponsor initiative,” he said.
Ambassadors may give talks to groups or organisations, network on a one-to-one basis and represent the charity at events.
Leask added that his connection with World Vision is merely a small cog in Shetland’s well-respected network of fundraising and charity endeavours.
“I know that somebody next door to me will be doing just as much,” he said.
