Community / Summer street spree planned for platinum jubilee
A DAY long ‘summer spree’ is being planned in Lerwick to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee.
Living Lerwick is looking to host the all-day event in the town on 4 June, with “music, games, competitions and fun at Da Street” on offer.
It is proposed to go on from midday to 9pm and a marquee and bar is likely to feature.
The party is part of a series of events being planned by Living Lerwick for the jubilee.
It will also host a ‘high street safari’ between 30 April and 12 June through an augmented reality trail complete with “Royal-themed characters from Buckingham Palace”.
This would be an official Jubilee event which will take place in other areas across the UK.
Participants will be able to take selfies with digital characters in a ‘choose your own adventure’ style trail as they collect digital prize badges to share with friends.
There will also be a royal art competition with schools and nurseries, with winning entries going on display in town centre business windows.
The town centre organisation has applied for around £2,000 of funding from Lerwick Community Council to go towards the costs.
It has also secured around £1,000 from the Scotland Loves Local Fund, and Living Lerwick will contribute roughly £7,000 itself.
In its funding application Living Lerwick said a platinum jubilee – marking 70 years of service – is a “very special and extremely rare occasion”.
“We would like to ensure the businesses of Lerwick town centre are able to welcome all Shetland residents to join in the celebrations in an appropriate way,” it added.
The events will feed into a wider programme of activities being planned across Shetland and the rest of the UK.
