News / Cumming delighted with London show
SHETLAND painter Kristi Cumming is one of only 15 UK artists to have been selected to show their work during a three-day exhibition in London, which opens on Friday.
The ‘OPEN’ exhibition, starting on Friday, is at 5th Base Gallery in East London and is organised by internet marketplace Etsy, where Cumming hosts her own online shop.
The 37 year old from Burra also works as an arts tutor at Shetland College and as an assistant at Bonhoga gallery.
She said she felt privileged to have been selected after over 600 artists applied to be exhibited.
Her large, colourful abstract paintings are all inspired by her home islands, its surrounding seas and the ever-changing sky.
“These paintings are made with love, colour and a ridiculous amount of concentration!” she said.
“A whole lot of who I am and where I am at (and what the beach looked like that night) goes into making them.
“I build the paintings up using various layers of opaque and translucent acrylics, they can take months in the making! All of them are trying to convey a sense of timeless wonderment and a deliciousness of colour.”
Cumming opened her shop with the online retailer earlier this year as it enables her to connect with potential buyers worldwide.
“I really like being part of the Etsy community,” she said. “It’s been very positive so far.
“And I’ve seen an increase in exposure as I was recently featured in an international Etsy blog focus on the UK and was one of eight makers chosen.”
The exhibition of contemporary artwork is open on Friday 17 October from 10am-8pm, on Saturday 18 October from 11am-6pm and on Sunday 19 October from 11am-3pm.
