Community / Radio team ready for this year’s Children In Need night
BBC Radio Shetland will again host the annual Children In Need fundraiser on Friday night, broadcasting live music from local bands and singers – plus running an auction to raise money for the charity’s annual appeal.
Auction prizes have been donated by the community and have been split into two slots: an early auction between 7pm and 10pm, and a STAR auction from 10pm until midnight.
Bids and donations can be pledged by phoning 01595 69 4747 during the opening hours for each auction.
Da Fustra, The Peter Wood Band, Skelburn, Freda Leask, Oot o Tune and young fiddler of the year Magnus Williamson will provide the musical entertainment live from the BBC’s Pitt Lane studios.
Anyone in the isles raising money for Children In Need – local schools, workplaces and community groups – should get in touch with the station to add their efforts to Shetland’s overall total, which in a normal year exceeds £20,000.
Local charities like Ability Shetland and the Shetland Befriending Scheme are currently benefiting from hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of Children in Need grant funding.
The Radio Shetland team will be on air from 5.30pm on Friday through until the early hours, and you can tune in to 92.7FM or listen live online via the BBC Sounds app.
Early auction:
- Shetland Jewellery – a silver necklace with a pendant of a red breasted robin;
- Blydoit Haddock – a gift voucher for 10 kilos worth of fresh haddock;
- Blydoit Smoked Haddock – a gift voucher for 5 kilos worth of smoked haddock;
- Victoria’s Tearoom – £50 voucher for the UK’s most northerly tearoom, valid for both the tearoom and giftshop in Unst;

- Sycamores – Four 4 year old sycamores in polypots donated by Jean Keith in Nesting;
- Primroses – A fish box full of purple and mauve primroses donated by Jean Keith in Nesting;
- Ooie Art – an art piece depicting a lighthouse, made using Shetland wool and seaglass;
- Big Bear – a giant ‘Cubbies’ teddy bear donated by Barbara Cheyne in Voe;
- Painting – A Cecil Duncan painting of a Shetland beach scene, called Afternoon in Shetland;
- Xmas Tree – a real Christmas tree (either a 6ft cut or 4ft potted Nordman Fir) from the Shetland Garden Co;
- Shetland Reel – a 500ml bottle of Shetland Reel’s new ‘Lemon Fest’ gin (18+ only);
- Festive Hamper – a mystery hamper of festive treats from the Bigton Community Shop;
- Baby Shawl – white shawl hand knitted and donated by Kath Simpson from Whalsay;
