Community / South Mainland Up Helly Aa planning to go ahead with 2022 event
THE SOUTH Mainland Up Helly Aa committee is still planning to go ahead with its 2022 festival – if Covid conditions allow.
Its committee said the final decision will be made nearer the time in consultation with all involved.
It comes after Delting Up Helly Aa also said it was preparing for its 2022 event to go ahead as planned.
Both fire festivals take place in mid to late March and they are the final two in the Up Helly Aa calendar.
There were the only two fire festivals which fell foul of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, and the last minute nature of their cancellations meant their preparations were well advanced.
No Up Helly Aa events were held in Shetland in 2021.
For 2022 a number of the earlier fire festivals – Lerwick, Scalloway and Bressay – have already been cancelled.
This is in part due to the lack of preparation time, and continued uncertainty around holding large events.
