Sport / From one Smith to another at top of football association
SENIOR councillor George Smith has been appointed as Shetland Football Association’s new president.
A previous committee member, he takes over from the departing Iain Smith.
George Smith, who represents the Shetland South council ward, was appointed at the association’s AGM on Thursday.
He told Shetland News he was pleased to take on the role.
“Football is quite an important part of the community and it had a really difficult year this last year with Covid and all the rest of it, so I’m hoping that this next season will be a bit easier,” Smith said.
The new president said it is important to provide opportunities for boys and girls to be able to progress from junior and juvenile football to the seniors.
One key aim for Smith is to speak to the referees’ association after the leagues encountered a shortage of men in black last season.
The councillor also paid credit to his predecessor and said the committee is in a strong place.
All roles have been filled for the 2022 season with Brian Johnston and Brydon Robertson returning to jointly fill the vacant secretary role.
The association said the remaining office bearers and committee members have all maintained their roles.
