News / Christmas tree taken down – just in time for Up Helly Aa
THE TREE at the Market Cross in Lerwick was finally taken down on Wednesday – nearly one month since Christmas Day.
Shetland Islands Council (SIC) said its roads department, which deals with putting up and taking down the tree, had prioritised gritting roads during the recent cold spells over removing the festive feature.
It has traditionally been said that keeping up decorations beyond the twelfth night of Christmas – 5 January – could bring bad luck.
The tree has been taken down just in time for Up Helly Aa on Tuesday, which will see the bill put up at the Market Cross in the morning before the jarl squad visit on their walk around the town.
The Norwegian tree is brought to town thanks to a partnership berween Living Lerwick, SIC, Northwards and NorthLink.
