THE ORGANISERS of Shetland Boat Week have hailed this year’s event as the most successful yet.

Over 500 people flocked to Hay’s Dock in Lerwick each day during the family-friendly event, which took place between 5-11 August.

More than 450 folk, meanwhile, took part in boat trips ranging from setting sail in historic sixareens Far Haaf and Vaila Mae to rowing around Hay’s Dock.

The younger generation helped to make over 200 small wooden boats during craft sessions, while the exhibitions were also popular.

On the Friday the coastguard helicopter and the Lerwick Lifeboat also put on a display exercise.

Ruth Mackenzie, chairwoman of organisers Shetland Amenity Trust, said: “It has been a truly fantastic week and our most successful to date.

“Shetland Boat Week is all about celebrating our maritime heritage and trying to engage the next generation with it so I have loved seeing so many young folk and families out on the water and getting involved.

“A huge thank you to the team, the volunteers, sponsors and supporters – we couldn’t have done it without you.”
