Community / MSP offers birthday wishes to drugs dog charity
SHETLAND MSP Beatrice Wishart has lodged a parliamentary motion celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the islands’ Dogs Against Drugs charity.
The charity, which works in partnership with local police, was founded in 2002 with a mission to detect and deter illegal drugs in the islands.
Liberal Democrat politician Wishart’s motion notes that the charity’s creation followed a number of drugs-related deaths and was inspired by the use of drug detection dogs at airport arrivals in the Faroe Islands.
The motion calls on parliament to applaud “the successes of the dog handlers and their dogs” and “understands that they have prevented hundreds of thousands of pounds’ worth of illegal drugs entering Shetland”.
Dogs Against Drugs regularly undertakes school visits to offer drugs education to children.
The motion congratulates the charity for its achievements and recognises “the importance of both the detection and prevention work undertaken by Dogs Against Drugs, and wishes everyone at the charity well as they celebrate this milestone”.
