Business / Unemployment rises again
THE NUMBER of unemployed people in Shetland rose over the last month, according to new figures published today (Tuesday).
The total number of claimants in Shetland – those receiving job seeker’s allowance and people on universal credit required to search work – stood at 525 at 9 July.
This represents 3.7 per cent of the population.
The figures show that 320 of the claimants were women and 200 were men.
The number of claimants is a rise of 35 from when the last figures were published in July, while it represents an increase of 330 compared to the same point last year.
In comparison, figures for Orkney show 410 claimants compared to Shetland’s 525.
Changes to the furlough scheme, which concludes at the end of October, is also likely to have an impact on the number of people who find themselves out of a job.
Figures previously published show that over 3,000 people in Shetland have at some point been on the furlough scheme.
