Community / Gulberwick Hall needs new committee members amid ‘dwindling’ numbers
THE FUTURE of the Gulberwick Hall is in “jeopardy” unless more committee members come forward.
Secretary Lynne Peart said as a result the committee is struggling to get volunteers to work at functions.
An AGM is being held at the hall on Tuesday 22 February at 7.30pm and anyone interested is asked to come along.
Peart said the committee currently has no chairperson, and while there are around 15 members “we could really do with more”.
There are also a few committee members who would like to stand down but can’t at the moment because there is no-one to replace them.
“The hall is really popular for kids’ parties, weddings, quiz nights, folk festival and accordion and fiddle festivals, but we really struggle to get the volunteers to come and work at any functions,” Peart explained.
“So if we can’t get the volunteers, we can’t take on the functions and we don’t make the money to keep the hall going, so it’s a bit of a vicious circle.”
She described the hall as “really important” for the community, especially as it plays host to the South Mainland Up Helly Aa.
Committee member Liam Mullay said volunteering at the hall is “very sociable, and a great way to meet a lot of the local community”.
“We would gladly welcome anyone interested in helping out to come to the AGM, whether it’s to help on the committee, volunteer at functions, assist with maintenance, or help out in any way you can.”
