News / Consultants for Scalloway ‘making places’ initiative
SHETLAND Islands Council has appointed Edinburgh-based design consultants GL Hearn to work with the local community to create a future vision for Scalloway.
The “Making Places” initiative aims to develop a shared view of the village’s future and produce a pilot “local place plan” containing priorities and actions.
GL Hearn will work with urban designers Iglu Studio on a number of “engagement events” in the coming months to gather views from a wide cross-section of the community on improvements in the village.
Those will include a young people’s forum and public meetings with a range of community groups and key stakeholders. Many of these meetings will take the form of “charette”, described as a “community workshop of intense activity, which encourages participation and problem solving”.
The first meetings are due to take place in April with follow-up events in June.
The “Making Places” initiative for Scalloway is one of 19 design projects across Scotland to receive Scottish Government funding.
SIC development committee chairman Alastair Cooper said: “I’m pleased that we’ve been able to appoint GL Hearn and Iglu Studio to this design project.
“We’re keen to ensure that the Scalloway community leads the planning for their future and these experienced design professionals will help them to do that. The result will also be a ‘local place plan’ and vision that the council can use to help us with our own future planning for the area.”
