Emergency services / Search for owner of abandoned rucksack continues
EFFORTS to trace the owner of a rucksack found on Friday afternoon at the Hermaness nature reserve, in Unst, are continuing this morning.
Coastguard teams from Lerwick, Mid Yell and Baltasound, as well as the Sumburgh based search and rescue helicopter, spent several hours on Friday evening searching the Unst coastline for the owner of the abandoned rucksack.
Emergency services were alerted at around 5pm on Friday after a member of the public raised concern for the owner’s welfare.
However, nothing has been found so far and police said they have had no reports of missing people in Shetland.
Emergency services stressed this morning that it could simply be a case of lost property.
A spokesperson for Shetland Coastguard said that voluntary teams from Baltasound and Mid Yell have resumed their search at Hermaness.
Police Scotland added: “We’ve conducted enquiries to trace the owner of the rucksack found, and these remain ongoing.”
Meanwhile, police in Shetland were alerted to possible possible unexploded ordnance that was brought ashore at Collafirth Pier on Friday.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “They have been assessed to pose no risk to the public.”
