Regional symbols will be burned at Holyrood
YOUNG people from Orkney and Shetland are being invited to select a symbol for the Northern Isles that will be burned in a flaming finale to Edinburgh’s hogmanay celebrations.
Young champions of the #ScotArt youth project and emerging artists are to lead creative workshops of young people from each region of Scotland to conceive and help design 14 symbols which they believe best encapsulate each of their regions.
Shetland youngsters can have their say by joining or contributing to a free workshop to be held in Isleburgh Community Centre in Lerwick on Saturday (17 November) from 11pm-4 pm to decide which #ScotArt symbol best captures the spirit of their region.
The interactive workshop is being led by #ScotArt young champion Christine Johnson, from Shetland, and young artist Issie Tovey, from Orkney, alongside Scottish based artist Ariel Killick, who will build the designs into wicker artworks.
It is hoped that young people in the area will explore what their region means to them and how best to sum that up in one symbol. This will be followed up by a creative session on the methods and materials used in wire and wicker sculptures and the chance to create their own piece of art to take home.
The 14 regional symbols will be made into giant wicker sculptures by Killick and will be displayed on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile from 21 to 29 December, after which they will be the focal point of Edinburgh’s hogmanay torchlight procession finale on 30 December.
Thousands of young people alongside young pipe and drum bands will take part in the procession down the Royal Mile into Holyrood Park before setting light to the artworks which will form the central heart shaped structure in the midst of a flaming outline of Scotland.
