A HOST of events and activities ranging from circus and live music to sports and a foam party have been announced as part of a local celebration of the national Year of Young People.
The BIG Takeover will be held between 14-16 September across a number of venues in Lerwick.
On the Friday there will be a disco for P5 to S1 children, an S2-S6 gig hosted by Shetland Young Promoters Group and an S2+ club night in Mareel.
There will also be film showings and dance workshops, while a weekend-long ‘inflatable extravaganza’ event will kick off at Gilbertson Park – as will a football challenge cup at Clickimin.
Other activities due to take place over the weekend include a circus performances and workshops, horror and stage make-up workshops, poetry and writing events and a cosplay competition.
Chairman of Shetland Islands Council’s education and families committee George Smith said: “This is going to be a tremendous, if not unique, event which has been organised largely by our young people themselves.
“It is a great opportunity for young folk and their families to get together for a fun weekend, and perhaps try out some activities for the first time.”
Sonny Thomason, Year of Young People ambassador and MSYP for Shetland, added: “The range of activities that will be available to children and young people is something special. I’m particularly looking forward to the visiting foam party, last seen in Shetland back in 2008.
“I’m particularly pleased that the BIG Takeover team have managed to negotiate free buses and ferries for members, ensuring an inclusive event for children and young people from Baltasound to Bigton.”
The BIG Takeover is supported by the council, Shetland Arts Development Agency, Shetland Recreational Trust, Shetland Museum and Archives, VisitScotland, Promote Shetland and Voluntary Action Shetland, with funding being provided by EventScotland in celebration of Year of Young People, and partner organisations.
