Total on film
LERWICK based company Millgaet Media has been awarded a 54 month contract to record the construction of the Total gas plant, next to Sullom Voe Terminal.
The company will supply film and stills photography on the Laggan-Tormore project.
Freedom project
A VIDEO art project by Polish artist Justyna Maluchnik will be showing at Weisdale’s Bonhoga Gallery until 3 October to coincide with the current open portrait awards exhibition.
‘Freedom’ consists of work done in Finland in 2008 and Poland in 2009 using volunteers including a philosopher, a prisoner, a monk, an artist and a feminist explaining how they view freedom.
Maluchnik is now living in Shetland and is asking the same question of islanders. Anyone wishing to take part in the project can email jane.matthews@shetlandarts.org for more information.
New care guidelines
SHETLAND Islands Council is going to have to take a new look at the way it buys in care services under new guidance from the Scottish government.
The government says it wants to improve and standardise services which cost £1.18 billion to provide across the country.
Under the new guidance local authorities will have to involve people who are cared for and carers themselves in the process of buying in their care, including older people, younger adults with disabilities and children and families – both in their own homes and in the community.
Councils will have to take a longer terms view of future needs and make sure that care contracts are being properly delivered.

New community sentences
NEW community sentences for offenders are likely to be introduced in the next few months.
The Community Payback Order (CPO) will replace existing community service orders, probation orders, supervised attendance orders and the former community reparation order.
Drug treatment and testing orders and the restriction of liberty order will remain in place.
The impact the changes will have on the criminal justice system remains to be seen, but members of the Northern Community Justice Authority – which includes the SIC – are concerned about the extra work the new order will create for its social work departments.
Esplanade bus stop closed
DUE to the temporary road closure at Lerwick’s Esplanade, the Esplanade Bus Stop will be out of service on Friday 24 September and Tuesday 28 September.
All buses will operate to and from the Viking Bus Station on these days. The 5pm buses will depart from the bus station five minutes later than scheduled.

THE COUNCIL’S grants unit is calling on local community groups, voluntary organisations and public services to register on its Shetland Community Directory website.
The on-line directory has been running since 2002, but was upgraded and re-launched last year to provide a “one stop shop” site where contact details and information on local groups and services can be displayed.
The upgraded directory offers a range of new features including on-line registration function; up to date weather reports and a community news section.

Breaking into China
COMPANIES interested in doing business with China can attend events being held on the Scottish mainland next month.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise join with Scottish Development International and the China-Britain Business Council to offer ‘Doing Business with China’ clinics on 19 and 20 October in Inverness and Forres respectively.
CBBC supports British companies of all sizes by providing business services, practical in-market assistance and industry initiatives via a network of nine UK offices and presence in 11 Chinese cities.
Each clinic session will last for 60 minutes and bookings will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone interested can contact Tracy Baird at tracy.baird@cbbc.org by Monday 11 October.
