News / Fire crews tackle blaze in Unst
FIRE fighters from Baltasound, Mid Yell and Brae were called out in atrocious weather conditions on Sunday evening to tackle a blaze at Sturrigarth, near Burrafirth, on the island of Unst.
Fire control said on Monday morning that an outbuilding was completely destroyed by the fire with the adjacent unoccupied house suffering 30 per cent fire damage and additional smoke and water damage. No one was injured.
Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at 7.30pm in the middle of a howling south easterly gale.
Fire fighters had to use two sets of breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and one main jet to extinguish the flames.
A police spokesman said that fire fighters “eventually extinguished the blaze in the midst of adverse weather conditions”. The fire is not being treated as suspicious at this time, he added
Meanwhile in other incidents during the weekend, police reported on Monday morning that:
•a 25 year old man was arrested and charged with assault and breach of the peace following a disturbance in a house in Lerwick, at around 10pm on Sunday night;
•enquiries were ongoing into two separate incidents of assault, one in which a 19 year old man was attacked in Commercial Street, in Lerwick, in the early hours of Sunday. The victim of the second assault was a 24 year old woman in a pub in Brae, also in the early hours of Sunday;
•a 20 year old woman was charged with a breach of the peace following a disturbance in a house on the west side of Shetland on Saturday evening;
•a 51 year old man was arrested for drink driving on the A970 at Quarff, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police also seized personal quantities of controlled drugs from a 23 year old woman and a 25 year old man following searches they carried out under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Police said they were calling for witnesses to come forward about the two ongoing cases of assault. Reports on all incidents are to be sent to the procurator fiscal.
