Community / Gilbertson Park path set for a makeover
THE PATH around the Gilbertson Park playing field is in line for an upgrade, with a focus on encouraging cycling.
The hope is that work on the 2.5 metre wide path will be completed by the end of the current financial year in the spring.
Shetland Islands Council’s roads network team leader Neil Hutcheson said the proposed work would upgrade the existing circular path around the sports field.
It would also create a new section of path between the Montfield entrance on the south side of the park to the games hall car park, improving accessibility to Bell’s Brae Primary School.
“This will link all of the entrances to the park, to encourage more cycling and walking, especially for younger cyclists to help them gain confidence in cycling in a safer environment,” Hutcheson said.
“This will also offer parents and children at Bell’s Brae Primary School an option to park at the games hall and to walk to and from school.
“The project will be funded by the Scottish Government’s Cycling Walking and Safer Routes budget.”
The council is inviting businesses interested in the job to get in touch.
