Community / Asta campsite secures funding worth quarter of a million
A PROJECT to create a caravan park and campsite at Asta in the Tingwall valley has secured funding worth over £250,000.
The funding has come from the Scottish Government’s rural tourism infrastructure fund.
The project, which could include ten pitches for caravans and motorhomes, eight tent spaces and three wigwams, is being proposed by the Scalloway Community Development Company.
It already has planning permission from Shetland Islands Council.
It could go some way to filling the gap created in the central mainland by the closure of the Lerwick campsite at the Clickimin in 2014.
More than a dozen tourist sites and projects across Scotland are to receive just over £3 million from the government fund.
Tourism secretary Fergus Ewing said: “While the tourism industry is currently halted due to the national lockdown and the need to keep suppressing coronavirus, it’s essential we continue supporting our tourism businesses, especially in rural and remote areas, so they are in the best position possible for welcoming visitors again when conditions allow.”
