Community / Marathon-running Martin thanks public for raising £14,500
THE CHAIRMAN of Relay for Life Shetland has paid thanks to everyone who contributed towards a remarkable fundraising total of £14,500 in support of his marathon for Cancer Research UK.
When Martin Henderson set out from just north of Voxter House on a cold, snowy morning at the end of January, he never expected the generosity of the Shetland public to help him raise so much money.
While the marathon was very much a personal challenge it also an opportunity to kickstart Relay for Life Shetland’s fundraising for 2021.
Accompanied by running partner Fiona Shearer, his route south took him past some of Shetland’s most iconic scenery – culminating in Lerwick yards from his house where he was welcomed by a beer and the warm applause of his friends and family.
Martin said: “The most difficult part of the run was climbing the last two hills coming out of Tingwall and up past Dale heading for town, but the cheers sporadically lining the roads was a great motivator. I want to thank the community for their support on the route and sponsorship, my running partner Fiona Shearer and my family.”
Asked what his next challenge would be, Martin said the committee was focused on its ongoing fundraising for Cancer Research UK and organising a virtual relay at the end of May but “when travel restrictions allow, I would like to do more marathons visiting some of the great events across the country”.
The virtual relay is scheduled to take place on 29 May, while it is hoped the next full relay event will happen on 28 May 2022.
