News round-up / Harpist’s fringe show, youth theatre anniversary, Aly Bain returns
A HARPIST originally from Shetland has been selected for the Made in Scotland showcase at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Sophie Rocks will perform her show Notes From Shetland to Shanghai at theSpace on the Mile on 19-20 and 22-24 August at 12.10pm each day.
The performance is a mix of music, poetry and spoken word, and it will explore the emotions connected with immigration.
Rocks will draw “influences from her traditional Shetland roots and cutting-edge contemporary music to explore the impact of migration on people from countries such as Scotland, Canada, Nigeria, Israel, Russia and of course, China.”
Made in Scotland, meanwhile, is a “curated showcase of high quality performance from Scotland” which is supported by the Scottish Government’s Edinburgh Festivals Expo Fund.
THE 25th anniversary of Shetland Youth Theatre will be celebrated in August with a performance that will revisit and reimagine characters from past productions.
Two workshops will be held on 24 and 25 August for anyone aged 12 and above.
Different areas around Mareel will be used as theatre spaces to create an “interactive performance”.
The weekend will culminate in a takeover of Mareel on 25 August with pop-up performances taking place from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.
Tickets will be available soon in person from Mareel and the Shetland Arts outlet at Sumburgh Airport, by phone on 01595 745500, or online at www.shetlandarts.org.
A production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest was originally planned for this summer to celebrate the 25th anniversary, but it was cancelled as “due to busy summers” the team would not be able to rehearse as intensively as hoped.
SHETLAND fiddler Aly Bain is set to return to Mareel in November to perform alongside Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ale Moller and American fiddler, singer, guitarist and banjo player Bruce Molsk.
The concert, which will see the trio explore their Celtic, Nordic and Appalachian cultures, will take place at Mareel in Lerwick on 14 November.
Bain recently postponed dates with Phil Cunningham after undergoing triple heart bypass surgery.
Tickets for the concert are available via the Shetland Arts box office.
